One Generation Calls to the Next

Grandparent's Day~

What a beautiful celebration of God's faithfulness across the generations we had on Monday. Having a front row seat as a teacher was a little glimpse of heaven. What a beautiful picture of the youngest of faiths singing with more seasoned faiths about just how much they ALL love Jesus.  Here are a few photos of our special grandparents and special friends with their first grade kiddos (there is a photo of each child with their grandparents or special friends in our class gallery) Look at all these smiling faces! Our room was filled to the brim...I loved it. We had a whole bunch of fun and squeezed in a little bit of first grade learning too.

Math~

Our math times have been focused on addition and subtraction strategies; Counting On is one strategy we have been using to solve addition equations. When we count on they say (or "think"...or pretend to put in our pocket) the greater number as if we already counted it. Then we count on from there. The last number we say is the total. We will use this strategy to find unknown totals. Counting On is a temporary strategy to help children learn fact fluency with addition and eventually subtraction within 10. The goal by the end of the grade is for 1st graders to automatically know the answer when the total is 10 or less.

We also have been working to grasp understanding of equations - focusing our work on writing and recognizing TRUE equations. Ask your child if he/she can write as many equations as possible for the number 8. Perhaps he/she may even write 6+2=7+1. They're getting pretty good at showing ALL they know! In addition, we've been working on writing proof drawings to demonstrate addition and subtraction equations. Look over your child's papers and review any tricky problems with your child. Conversations centered around math boosts confidence and fosters growth.

Forest Friends~

(There are SO MANY pictures in the class gallery! Please take a look)

We are blessed to be welcomed into Mrs. Hucul's class. We found that we recognized many friends Forest School from church, soccer, after school care and even some former classmates. We first met in their chapel area for singing and a devotion and then we headed to the woods to play. The creek, the mud kitchen, hammocks, frogs, cement cupcakes and more were highlights of our play. We ended our time in a closing circle with EVERYONE, teachers and students, looking forward to the next time we get together.

Reading and Writing and Dogs, Oh My!

We had so many amazing literacy opportunities this week! The Ruff Reader Therapy Dogs came for the first time on Tuesday, we read and returned our first bag books and had our very first reading celebration where we sat in the author's chair to share all of the hard work we have been doing in 1st grade writing.

What a FULL and FUN week we had in 1st grade!
